| The Menopause Diet as Featured in Star Magazine | ||||||||||||||||||||
| August, 2002 Last week Star reported on the terror in Hollywood over the controversy surrounding HRT - hormone replacement therapy - for menopausal women. A government study shows that HRT, which is taken by millions of women, could expose hem to higher risks of heart disease, cancer and other deadly ailments. Now, just for Star readers, Dr. Larrian Gillespie - a top medical expert on menopause and hormone replacement therapy whose diet is followed by celebrities like Cher, Cybill Shepherd and Roma Downey, offers our female readers a safe, sensible way of dealing with menopausal symptoms. "I've devised a special menopause diet just for Star readers," says Gillespie, author of the best-selling Menopause Diet Book. "Weight gain is a very harmful aspect of menopause, because it makes us candidates for heart disease, high blood pressure and other serious illnesses. "When our ovaries are kicking out the last eggs in their stockpile, enzymes in our bodies, which are dependent on estrogen, begin to falter. "Cholesterol levels start to climb, and the ration of 'good' versus 'bad' lipids in our blood takes a nosedive, increasing our risk of heart disease and strokes. "As if this weren't enough, calcium begins t sneak out of our bones, leaving them vulnerable to everyday stresses. Gallbladders go on strike, refusing to empty completely, spewing gallstones in their wake. "The hormonal teeter-totter that's going on inside our bodies throws off our ability t burn calories and with that comes the inevitable weigh gain that middle-age women dread." The doctor says that by allowing the menopause diet to act as a foundation for health and by lowering the dose of hormones we take, we can protect ourselves against serious disease and the ravages of menopause. But she adds: "Each of you must make a personal decision about hormone therapy, after discussing it with your doctor." |
