Thyroid News -

  • Guidelines for Detection of Thyroid Dysfunction -
The American Thyroid Association recommends that adults be screened for thyroid dysfunction by measurement of the serum thyrotropin concentration, beginning at age 35 years and every 5 years thereafter. The indication for screening is particularly compelling in women.
  • Scientists report that consuming calcium carbonate, the most recommended form of calcium supplements can interfere with your thyroid medication. According to a study done at UCLA, calcium can prevent the absorption of thyroxine. Now this just doesn't seem fair... as women are most likely to be hypothyroid AND at risk for osteoporosis. However, if you take your thyroid in the morning and your calcium supplements at night, you can prevent this problem.
    JAMA 2000(283)21:2822-2825
